Tomas Hedberg - Sleeper EP

Flow Vinyl continue their quest to release the finest underground electronic dance music with ‘Sleeper’, a superb offering from Tomas Hedberg. Supporters of the label will be familiar with his work with other Hedberg releases including ‘Thugz’ last summer featuring a Guy J remix. Widespread DJ support included an ‘Essential New Tune’ on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Hedberg also released ‘Show Business’ on sister-label Wolf Music and remixed the recent Shades of Gray single, ‘Whispers in the Dark,’ so a follow-up to ‘Thugz’ was long overdue.

‘Sleeper’ does not disappoint. With its driving percussion, pulsating bassline and trippy vocals and effects, it builds to a dramatic peak crescendo that’s designed for maximum dancefloor effect. This is the sound that has made Hedberg such a popular DJ in Ibiza. Born in Sweden but now based on the island, he’s played at many of the top clubs including regular dates with Pete Tong at his Wonderland night at Eden. Other releases include tracks on Pieces of Eight and Pacha Recordings, as well as a recent remix for Mike Monday.

‘Sleeper’ includes an excellent remix package with a truly international flavor. Canadian Maher Daniel presents two ‘Groove Box’ reworkings which do just that: strip the track back to its essential groove and throw in some extra funk. More late night than peak time, Daniel’s remixes still pack a punch but with a deep tech vibe. Daniel has become one to watch in recent months with his remix of ‘Rumblefish’ by Tone Depth on Bedrock making number one in the Beatport techno chart. You can also find him playing at Stereo in Montreal, one of North America’s finest clubs, on a regular basis.

Italian DJ and producer Alex Dolby, meanwhile, takes ‘Sleeper’ in a whole new direction. Known for his breadth of musical vision, Dolby pushes the drums to the forefront to create a brooding, atmospheric landscape that gets under the listener’s skin. This is the work of an artist not afraid to kick against the conventions of the dance music blueprint and you can expect to hear a lot more from him in 2010.

Tomas Hedberg provides the final track himself with ‘Smash & Repair’. Deeper than ‘Sleeper’ with its subtle groove, it still retains the trademark Hedberg energy and shows his versatility and skill in the studio. Once again Flow Vinyl have gone the extra mile to bring together artists representing the best new electronic music on the global scene. With its Ibiza feel, ‘Sleeper’ is also the perfect reminder that the island’s summer season will be with us again very soon.
