Hot on the heels of OMB’s ‘Tunami’ comes the second Flow Vinyl release of 2011, ‘Idleness’ by Daniel Mehes. There’s nothing safe or formulaic about the label, they simply find the best and most innovative electronic dance music out there and put it out. Daniel Mehes proves the point perfectly.
After the intensity of ‘Tunami’, ‘Idleness’ is a deeper, more melodic affair. Based in Budapest, Daniel Mehes has crafted a unique sound that’s full of emotional and shimmering beauty. Underpinned by a solid techno groove, ‘Idleness’ is simple in structure but complex in ideas. It draws the listener in and grows with each play. This may not be standard peak time music, but it has all the hallmarks of a classic end of night track as the pace slackens and the dawn rises. Daniel Mehes is a major talent in waiting on this evidence.
Fiord and Tim Richards are regular contributors to the label including their recent single, ‘Kopi Hitam’, with Joel Armstrong, so their remix is a natural partner to the original. They beef up the groove and take ‘Idleness’ on a twisted journey full of atmosphere and trippy effects. Save this one for the after party!
Meanwhile, one of Portugal’s finest producers Diogo Ribeiro and label founder Pena join forces for their own reinterpretation that can only be described as dark funk. They make the rhythm really swing before releasing the pressure and then building it right back up again. Their remix oozes class.
Finally, Pablo Acenso & Juan Deminicis follow their fine remix of ‘Tunami’ with another strong effort that packs a progressive punch.
All different, all good, ‘Idleness’ and its remixes are forward-thinking dance music of the highest order. It doesn’t get much better.
