FLR1321EP - Daniel Mehes - Shoya

The name Daniel Mehes will be familiar to followers of Flow Records. The Hungarian DJ and producer, now based in London, released ‘Idleness’ on sister-label Flow Vinyl in 2011, and it marked him out as a producer deserving serious attention. Now it’s the turn of Flow Records with ‘Shoya’, a more than worthy successor.

In typical Daniel Mehes style, ‘Shoya’ is a deep, melodic track, expertly produced, and packed with subtle sounds and intricate touches. Underneath lies a deceptively strong techno groove which provides the perfect platform for this seriously talented artist to let his imagination run wild. Think luscious synths, glistening cymbals and bubbling acid lines. With so much good source material to work with, it should come as no surprise that the remixes are rich and varied.

Flow keep things close to home with the first version provided by Lisbon’s own Dani the Menace, co-founder of On & Off Music. Using the track’s techno backbone as his foundation, he strips back the original giving it a darker, trippy edge. This is a proper slow-burner of a track.

The second remix comes from Tash, the man behind Movement Recordings and one of the leading figures of the Greek electronic music scene. He adds a little more light and space to ‘Shoya’ before increasing the intensity with greater emphasis on the melodic synth lines.

Next stop, London and Tom Real, an emerging name on the progressive techno scene and part of the Shifty Disko crew. This man knows a thing or two about working the dancefloor, and his remix does exactly that with jackin’ beats, a funked-up bassline and vocal effects. Completing a fine package is Shine from Osaka in Japan who adds an old school house flavour to create a driving workout.
