FLR1326EP - Fenix Project - Cosmology EP

Flow Records change gear with their next release, but the results are just as powerful as their peak time dancefloor cuts. Fenix Project is the production alias of Lisbon-based DJ Lama, and he established his Flow credentials with a funk-fuelled remix of Diogo Ribeiro’s ‘No Contact’ released in June. Now he’s back with four original tracks in the shape of the ‘Cosmology’ EP.

Covering a broad a range of freestyle grooves and ambient moods, the ‘Cosmology’ EP is a classy affair. ‘Listen to My Heart’ gets things started with delicate synth lines and vocal samples underpinned by a tough kick drum and pulsating rhythm. The atmospherics of the track are further enhanced by additional breakbeats before melting into drifting piano notes. ‘Miss You’ is next as the pace slows a little and the breakbeats come forward. The percussion is interwoven with haunting keyboards reminiscent of the icy sounds of early Detroit techno. It still manages to wrap the listener in emotional warmth; perfect sunset music for a winter’s evening, in fact.

The third tack, ‘Sub Zero’, meanwhile, provides a deeper, sparser sonic landscape accompanied by an enchanting melody and cinematic effects. Its melancholy edge enhances the mood of the EP superbly. The title track closes this fine collection of music as we head off into space to a soundtrack of ambient textures meshed with a deep house groove. ‘Cosmology’ lifts the spirits to sublime effect, and completes a fascinating music adventure showcasing the Fenix Project as a talented young producer, and Flow Records as a label with imagination and diversity at its heart.
